A Library Built From a Merchant's Fortune

The David Sassoon Library, completed in 1870 and funded by the wealthy Baghdadi Jewish merchant whose name it carries, remains an active reading room today, its Gothic architecture and quiet, book-lined interior offering a considerably calmer counterpoint to Mumbai's busier streets.

A Later, Different Kind of Independence

Goa's integration into India came through a brief military action in December 1961, ending over four and a half centuries of Portuguese colonial rule — a history considerably longer, and more recently concluded, than the rest of India's own path to independence. That extended period under separate rule is a large part of why Goa still feels, in many ways, distinct from the rest of the country.

The Largest Church Asia Had Ever Seen

Sé Cathedral, completed in 1619 in Old Goa, was reportedly the largest church in Asia at the time of its construction, and its imposing Portuguese-Gothic facade still dominates the surrounding area, standing as one of the clearest physical markers of just how significant Goa was to Portugal's colonial ambitions in the region.

A Fort Looking Out to Sea

Reis Magos Fort, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century on the northern bank of the Mandovi River, has been carefully restored in recent years and now functions as a cultural centre alongside its role as a heritage site, offering sweeping river views from its ramparts and a closer look at Goa's military and colonial past.
