This route, built for travellers flying out of Singapore, moves from Mumbai's density down the Konkan coastline, up into Mahabaleshwar's cool plateau, and finally across into Karnataka's coffee-growing hills around Chikmagalur — four places that don't obviously belong on the same itinerary, until you're actually moving through them.

Four Very Different Versions of Western and Southern India

Nothing about this trip repeats itself. Mumbai is dense, fast and coastal in an urban sense. The Konkan stretch that follows is coastal in an entirely different, quieter way — fishing villages, laterite cliffs, and forts built by regional powers who understood the value of this shoreline long before tourism did. Mahabaleshwar swaps the coast for altitude and colonial-era hill station charm. Chikmagalur, the trip's final and most distant stop, swaps all of that again for Karnataka's coffee country, a landscape that has more in common with parts of East Africa than with anywhere else on this route.

Mumbai: Where the Trip Begins

Most flights from Singapore land directly into Mumbai, which makes it the natural starting point. Beyond the usual landmarks, the Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site reached by a short ferry from the Gateway of India, hold a rock-cut Shiva temple dating back roughly 1,500 years, carved directly into a hillside on an island in Mumbai harbour. Haji Ali Dargah, a mosque built on a small islet connected to the mainland by a causeway that disappears at high tide, adds a different, quieter kind of landmark before the trip heads south along the coast.

The Konkan Coast: Forts, Fish Curry and Red Earth

A Coastline Built on Trade and Defence

The Konkan stretch south of Mumbai is dotted with forts built by the Maratha empire under Shivaji, including Sindhudurg, constructed on a rocky island off Malvan in the 17th century specifically to guard the coast against naval incursions. The Konkan region produces the Alphonso mango, widely considered India's finest, with the growing season running roughly April through June. Beyond mangoes, Konkani food leans heavily on coconut and fresh seafood, with fish curry rice served in nearly every roadside establishment along this stretch.

Mahabaleshwar: A Hill Station Built by the British

Mahabaleshwar's role as a hill station dates back to 1828, when Sir John Malcolm, then Governor of Bombay, established it as a summer retreat for the British administration, a role it held for decades before independence. The plateau sits at over 1,350 metres, and nearby Panchgani, with its Table Land — reportedly the second-largest volcanic plateau in Asia — extends the same cool, elevated landscape a short drive further.

Chikmagalur: The Trip's Final, Farthest Stop

Where Indian Coffee Began

Local legend holds that coffee cultivation in India began here in the 17th century, when a pilgrim named Baba Budan smuggled seven coffee beans out of Yemen and planted them in the hills that now carry his name — Baba Budangiri. Whether or not the story is precisely accurate, Chikmagalur has since become one of India's most significant coffee-growing regions, and estate tours here are considerably more hands-on than the more polished versions found elsewhere.

Mullayanagiri and the Western Ghats

Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak at just over 1,900 metres, offers sweeping Western Ghats views for travellers willing to make the climb, while Hebbe Falls, tucked deep within a coffee estate, requires a jeep ride and a short trek to reach — a deliberately less accessible stop that keeps it from feeling overcrowded.

A Longer Journey, Worth Planning For

It's worth being upfront that Chikmagalur sits a considerable distance from Mahabaleshwar, crossing from Maharashtra into Karnataka, and this leg is typically covered by a flight connection through Pune, Mumbai or Bengaluru rather than a direct road journey.
