What Happened Here

On April 13, 1919, British troops under the command of General Reginald Dyer opened fire without warning on a large crowd of unarmed civilians gathered in this walled garden in Amritsar for the Baisakhi festival and a peaceful public meeting. Several hundred people were killed and many more wounded in what remains one of the most significant and painful events of the British colonial period in India, and one widely regarded as a turning point that hardened public support for the independence movement.

What Remains Today

The garden has been preserved as a memorial, with several original brick walls left intact and still marked by bullet holes from that day, kept visible deliberately rather than repaired, as a direct, physical record of what took place. A well within the grounds, where a number of people died attempting to escape the gunfire, is similarly preserved and marked.

An eternal flame, known as the Amar Jyoti, burns within the memorial complex alongside a commemorative structure, offering visitors a quiet, respectful space to reflect on the site's history rather than a purely informational monument.
