Jaipur got there first by roughly a century. Founded in 1727 under Sawai Jai Singh II, it's widely cited as India's first planned city, its streets and sectors laid out according to Vastu Shastra, the ancient architectural tradition governing spatial design and cosmology. Jaipur's original layout divided the city into nine rectangular sectors, or chowkris, reflecting the nine divisions of the universe in Vedic cosmology, with one corner sector deliberately shifted to accommodate a nearby hill rather than forcing the geometry to ignore the landscape entirely — a practical compromise within an otherwise rigid design.

The Architect Behind the King's Vision

While Sawai Jai Singh II is credited with commissioning Jaipur's design, much of the technical execution is attributed to Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, a Bengali scholar and architect whose command of both mathematics and traditional Vastu principles allowed the king's ambitious vision to actually be built rather than remain theoretical.

Jodhpur

A Palace Built to Provide Work

Umaid Bhawan Palace, one of the largest private residences in the world, was commissioned in 1943 not purely out of royal ambition but partly as a famine relief project, employing thousands of labourers during a period of severe drought when traditional agricultural work had disappeared. Today the palace is split between a private royal residence, a museum, and a luxury hotel operated by the Taj Group.

Udaipur

A City Held Together by Its Lakes

Udaipur's location in an otherwise arid region relies on a deliberately engineered system of interconnected lakes, including Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Udai Sagar and Swaroop Sagar, historically designed and expanded to manage water storage and supply for a growing desert-adjacent city rather than existing purely for scenic effect.

A School of Painting All Its Own

The Mewar School of miniature painting, developed under Udaipur's royal patronage, produced a distinct style characterised by bold colour and detailed court scenes, and examples of this tradition remain on display within the City Palace complex, offering a quieter cultural counterpoint to the city's more famous architecture.

Asia's Oldest Stock Exchange

The Bombay Stock Exchange, established in 1875, holds the distinction of being Asia's oldest stock exchange, and its historic building in South Mumbai remains a recognisable landmark tied directly to the city's long-standing role as India's financial capital.

A Dome Built Without Pillars

The Global Vipassana Pagoda, completed in 2009, houses one of the largest stone domes in the world constructed without any internal support pillars, built specifically to accommodate large group meditation sessions and standing as a striking, modern architectural counterpoint to Mumbai's older colonial-era landmarks.
