Chapter One: Monuments and Memory

The trip opens in Delhi at India Gate, a 42-metre sandstone archway built to honor the more than 70,000 Indian soldiers who died in the First World War. It sits at the heart of Rajpath, one of the city's grandest boulevards, and it's as much a living public space as a memorial — locals picnic on the lawns around it in the evening, which makes it a good first taste of how history and daily life sit side by side in India.

From Delhi, the package flies to Aurangabad for the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites carved directly into volcanic rock, some dating back over 2,000 years. Ajanta's caves are painted Buddhist monasteries and prayer halls, their frescoes remarkably preserved given their age. Ellora, roughly 30 kilometers away, goes further still — 34 caves representing Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions side by side, including the Kailasa Temple, a single monolithic structure cut downward out of one solid rock face rather than built up from the ground. It's one of the most genuinely astonishing engineering feats in the country, and photographs consistently undersell it

Chapter Two: Ruins and the Coast

The second half of the trip trades monuments built by empires for what's left when those empires disappear. Hampi, in Karnataka, was once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire — a city so wealthy that 16th-century travelers compared it to Rome. What remains is a UNESCO-listed landscape of boulder hills, temple complexes, and stone chariots scattered across several kilometers, best explored slowly, ideally by bicycle, with a stop at Matanga Hill for sunrise or sunset over the ruins.

From Hampi, the trip closes in Goa at Fort Aguada, a 17th-century Portuguese fortress built to guard the Mandovi River from Dutch and Maratha naval attacks. Its lighthouse still stands, and the fort's laterite walls look out over one of Goa's most photographed stretches of coastline. Unlike the earlier stops, this one isn't really meant to be studied — it's meant to be the point where the trip finally slows down, with the beaches around Candolim and Sinquerim just below the fort itself.
