The Rann of Kutch works on a similar principle, except here it's salt instead of water, and the transformation happens with the seasons rather than the tide. This route, built for travellers flying out of Rennes, moves through Ahmedabad's old city, two of Gujarat's most significant temple towns, and finishes at one of the strangest, most photogenic landscapes in India.

Why We Route This Trip the Way We Do

We've been organising Gujarat and Saurashtra circuits for European travellers for a number of years now, and this particular combination — Ahmedabad, Dwarka, Somnath, and the Rann of Kutch — is one we keep coming back to because the geography actually supports it. Rather than criss-crossing the state, these four stops sit along a manageable west-to-northwest arc, which means less time in transit and more time actually seeing each place properly. It's also a route we're honest with clients about: it isn't available year-round in its full form, for reasons explained further down, and we'd rather set that expectation early than oversell the trip.

Ahmedabad: Where the Trip Begins

Ahmedabad's old city earned UNESCO World Heritage City status in 2017, and walking through its dense mix of havelis, mosques and Hindu temples makes that recognition easy to understand. The Sabarmati Ashram, Gandhi's home for over a decade and the starting point of the 1930 salt march, sits on the riverbank a short drive from the old city centre. Our guides here tend to have a background in local history rather than generic tourism training, which shows in the kind of detail they're able to add beyond what's written on a placard.

Somnath: A Temple Rebuilt Seven Times

Somnath holds the distinction of being the first of India's twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, and its history is as much about resilience as devotion — the temple has reportedly been destroyed and rebuilt at least seven times over the centuries, most notably after being sacked during Mahmud of Ghazni's raid in 1025 CE. The current structure, completed in 1951, sits directly on the Arabian Sea coast, and the evening light-and-sound show here traces this history in a way that adds real context for visitors who might otherwise miss it.

Dwarka: The Next Stop North Along the Coast

A few hours up the coast from Somnath, Dwarka centres around the Dwarkadhish Temple, tied in local tradition to the legendary city of Lord Krishna. We'd be doing this route a disservice if we didn't mention that Dwarka is a working pilgrimage town, not a curated tourist site — expect crowds, ritual, and a level of religious intensity that's part of the genuine experience rather than something staged for visitors.

The Rann of Kutch: A Landscape With a Season

Why Timing Matters Here

This is the part of the trip we're most direct about with travellers. The Rann of Kutch's famous white salt desert is only accessible and at its most striking between roughly November and February, during the Rann Utsav festival season. Outside this window, monsoon flooding and extreme summer heat make the salt flats inaccessible or simply not worth the visit. If your travel dates from Rennes fall outside this window, we'll say so plainly and suggest adjusting the itinerary rather than including a stop that won't deliver what the photos promise.

What the Experience Actually Involves

During the right season, the Rann stretches out into a flat, blindingly white expanse of salt crust, particularly dramatic under a full moon, which is why the Rann Utsav festival times many of its events around the lunar calendar. Nearby Bhuj adds a cultural layer with its handicraft villages, where embroidery and mirror-work traditions specific to the Kutch region are still practised much as they have been for generations.

Getting Here from Rennes

Routes from Rennes typically connect through Paris before reaching Ahmedabad, which serves as the natural entry and exit point for this trip. Internal travel between Somnath, Dwarka and the Rann of Kutch is handled by road, given the distances involved don't justify domestic flights, and we manage this scheduling directly so you're not left coordinating multiple regional transfers yourself.

What Our Experience on This Route Has Taught Us

A few things we've learned from running this circuit repeatedly, rather than assumptions: the Somnath light-and-sound show is worth timing your day around, since arriving too late in the evening means missing it entirely. Dwarka's temple crowds thin out noticeably before 8am, which is worth knowing if you'd rather have a calmer visit. And the drive to the Rann of Kutch, while long, is broken up well by stops in smaller Kutch villages that most standard itineraries skip entirely.
